1 Corinthians 10
Don’t give in to temptations, look for a way out!

Read 1 Corinthians 10. Which part of 1 Corinthians 10 inspired you the most?

Note: Paul starts with the negative examples of the Israelites to illustrate how one could be disqualified for the prize (9:27); thus, urges the Corinthians to exercise self-discipline in their Christian walk.

  1. The Failure of Israel: There are five negative lessons illustrated by the failure of the Israelites — “not desire evil” (v.6 ESV), “not be idolaters” (v.7), “not commit sexual immorality” (v.8), “not test the Lord” (v.9), and “not grumble” (v.10). A privileged group as Israel, who started the race (i.e. their exodus), did not all end well. Let us take that as warnings (v.11) and beware of possible pitfalls in our spiritual race. “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!” (v.12) Reflect upon your life and list down some of the temptations that you are facing.

  2. The Provision of a Way Out: “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” (v.13) Hold onto God’s promise that there is a way out. Pray over the temptations that you are facing and meditate to see what some of the “ways out” are when you are tempted. Write them down on the list of temptations you made above (e.g. when tempted to lose your temper, take a deep breath and leave the situation; when tempted with internet porn, use internet filter or accountability software; etc.).

  3. The Guideline on Freedom: We could exercise our freedom, yet bear in mind that our focus is to build up people and to glorify God (“‘Everything is permissible’—but not everything is beneficial. ‘Everything is permissible’—but not everything is constructive.” [v.23] “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” [v.31]). Thus, we should shy away from activities that do the opposite. List down some of your attitudes or behaviors that may stumble others or not glorify God.

  4. Your own insight: (fill in yourself)

Meditation and Application:

Meditate on the above questions along with the necessary actions. Pray for determination and God’s empowerment to face the various temptations and your weaknesses. Pray and plan for a way out!
