1 Corinthians 4
Beware of complacency and a judging attitude. Focus on further developing our Christian characters so that we could have something that others could imitate.
Read 1 Corinthians 4. Which part of 1 Corinthians 4 inspires you the most?
  1. Faithful and Not Judging: In 1 Cor. 4, Paul added three more roles to his list in the previous chapter — a Steward (vv.1-2, ESV), a prisoner on death role (v.9), and a father (v.15). Paul did not mind others’ criticism, nor would he criticize others. His only concern was to be a faithful steward. The contrast is that we often seek approval from others, while a faithful steward only seeks the approval of his master. List some of the criticisms that bother you, and how keeping the focus on “faithfulness” could bring a change.

  2. Humble and Not Complacent: Paul listed a series of contrast between the Corinthians and the apostles — kings vs. prisoners on death role, wise vs. foolish, strong vs. weak, honored vs. dishonored (vv.8-10) to warn the Corinthians against a lifestyle of complacency. How could you guard your spiritual walk against complacency?

  3. Loving and Not Spoiling: Paul considered himself as a loving father to the Corinthians; he even urged the Corinthians to imitate him (v.16). However, he also reminded them that he was not without power for discipline. Is there any qualities or behaviors in your life that others could imitate? In what ways that you could further develop yourself so that you could become a spiritual father to others?

  4. Your own insight: (fill in yourself)

Meditation and Application:

Meditate on the above questions along with the necessary actions. Take note of areas that you could become complacent, and focus on areas that you could further develop yourself and be a faithful steward of the Lord, as well as a spiritual father to others.
