1 Timothy 4
Shape Up or Ship Out!
Read 1 Timothy 4. Which part of 1 Timothy 4 inspires you the most?
  1. Beware of Heresies: Paul warned Timothy regarding the dualism of the Gnostics — believing that spirit is good and matter is evil — luring people to believe that all appetites were evil, including normal desire for sex and food (v.3). In the same way, we need to beware of and to remind others regarding false teachings and false teachers (v.6). Try listing some heresies that you’ve seen today.

  2. Train Yourself to be Godly: Paul compared the limited benefits of physical exercise to the invaluable training of godliness. In what way have you been training yourself in godliness? Draft a practical plan and see how you could fit that (i.e. training of godliness) into your daily schedule (e.g. prayer time, devotional time, periodic retreat and solitude time, etc.).

  3. Be an Example: Age and maturity are not necessary in direct proportion. Reflect and compare your spiritual age (i.e. how long you have been a Christian) with your spiritual maturity. What areas do you need to improve in order to be an example for other believers (e.g. in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity [v.12]); and how?

  4. Do Not Neglect Your Gift(s): Paul encouraged Timothy not to neglect his gift (v.14), what spiritual gifts do you possess? In what way(s) have you been exercising your spiritual gifts in the ministry? Try to figure out your spiritual gifts (you could use any online spiritual gifts test) and seek for ways that you could use those gifts in the ministry.

  5. Your own insight: (fill in yourself)

Meditation and Application:

Meditate on the above questions along with the necessary actions. Try working on your “Spiritual Exercise Plan” and see how you could implement that on your daily schedule.
