James 4
Draw near to God, resist the devil!
Which part of James 4 inspires you the most?
-
Beware of Conflicts: James admonished his readers not to involve in fights and quarrels (vv.1-2), or in judging or slandering others (vv.11-12); but to be aware of envy and pride (vv.5-6, 10). Reflect upon some of the conflicts that you have with others, how would humility help ease or resolve the conflicts? Drop down some action items that you could do and start working on easing the tension.
-
Evaluate Your Prayer: Sometimes we do not get what we want because we do not ask God (v.2); while other times, we do not get what we want because we ask with the wrong motives (v.3). Reflect upon your prayer life in the area of supplication and evaluate the motives behind your recent prayers. Ask God to help you realign your desires with His will, then present your renewed prayer to God.
-
Draw Near to God: We are to humble ourselves, submit to and draw near to God, as well as to resist the devil and repent. Evaluate your relationship with God, see in what way(s) that you could draw closer to Him.
-
Plan but not Boast: We are not to boast about tomorrow; instead, we should plan and commit our plans to the Lord. Do you have a plan for this coming year? What do you want to accomplish in life? Write it down and say a prayer to commit your plan to God as James suggested, “If it is the Lord’s will, [may I] live and do this or that” (v.15).
