REVELATION
Overview

Authorship: John, the Apostle (1:1, 4, 9; 22:8)

Recipients: Seven churches in Asia (1:4)

Date: ~ A.D. 95-96

  • Exiled on Patmos Island during the reign of Domitian (died in A.D. 96)

  • Allowed to return to Ephesus afterward

Place: Island of Patmos

Purpose: To reveal events which will take place immediately before, during, and following the second coming of Christ. Thus, to assure the recipients of the ultimate triumph of Christ over all who rise up against Him and His saints; to encourage them to persevere by standing firm in Christ in view of God’s plan for the righteous and the wicked; and to challenge complacent Christians to stop compromising with the world.

Theme: Christ’s future triumph over the forces of evil and His re-creation of the world for the redeemed

Theme Verse: 1:19

“Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later.”

Revelation 1
Jesus may come back anytime, are you prepared to meet Him?
Read Revelation 1. Which part of Revelation 1 inspires you the most?
  1. Jesus Transforms Us: Jesus loves us and has freed us from our sins through His death and His resurrection (v.5). Though we are sinners, He has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve God (v.6). Take some time to meditate on how God has transformed you to be the person you are now. Praise Him for His grace and mercy; yet, keep in mind that God has not finished in working in and through you. Commit your life to Him as He continues to shape and to mold you to be the person whom He desires you to be.

  2. Jesus Will Come in Glory: The description in vv.13-16 resembled the description of the Messiah in Daniel 7:9, 13-14, & 10:5-6. Jesus will no longer come as a baby in a manger; but in His second coming, as a judge coming with the clouds, holding the keys of death and Hades as  well as the seven stars, and walked among the seven lampstands. John’s response to the glorious Christ was to fall at His feet as though dead, how would your response be? Are you ready to meet the Lord if He comes today? Why or why not? What could you do to better prepare yourself to meet Him.

  3. Your own insight: (fill in yourself)

Meditation and Application:

Meditate on the above questions along with the necessary actions. Focus on allowing God to work in your life so that you could be more prepared to meet Jesus at His second coming.
