Titus 1
Strive for excellence, God deserves the best!
Which part of Titus 1 inspires you the most?
  1. Qualifications of Elders: The term elders (v.5) and overseer (v.7) are interchangeable, referring to the same office. Paul listed 17 qualifications for elders here.

  • Social and domestic excellence (v.6): Blameless (above reproach), husband of one wife, and believing and obedient children.

  • Personal excellence:

    • 5 vices (v.7): Not overbearing (arrogant & self-willed), not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, and not pursuing dishonest gain.

    • 7 virtues (v.8): hospitable, loves what is good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.

  • Doctrinal excellence (v.9): Hold firmly to the trustworthy message, encourage others by sound doctrine, and refute those who oppose it.

  • Though Paul listed these qualifications for elders, these are also qualities that every follower of Christ should pursue (it would be inconceivable that a lay person could be a husband of many wives, arrogant, quick-tempered, addicted to wine, violent, etc.). Out of the above qualifications, pick a few that you will need to work on to improve. How would you approach to do that?

   2.  Characteristics of False Teachers: Paul warned Titus of those who are rebellious, mere talkers, and deceivers,

who were interested in dishonest gain. They were to be silenced and rebuked so that they would be sound in faith and not follow the wrong path. The ultimate purpose of discipline is to turn the wayward individuals around to the truth. Do you have anyone in mind who may need to be reproached or be corrected? Start praying for the person(s) for a change of heart, while seeking the wisdom of your church leaders regarding confronting the person.

   3.  Your own insight: (fill in yourself)

Meditation and Application:

Meditate on the above questions along with the necessary actions. Start praying for and working on the qualifications that you have picked in the coming weeks.
